The manual calls for a "water based lubricant". The lubricant sold through Dr. Kaplan is quite exspensive. Can you reccomend an over the counter alternative? Why not just use baby oil or something of that sort?

GREAT QUESTION!
Water based lube is the best to use (especially ID Glide) because it is very long lasting and it is easy to clean (from the cylinder and from your hand from the application).
I do have a suggestion. If you don't care about the mess you will make in the shower (assuming that you clean your cylinder in the shower) and the mess you will make when you are wiping your "lube application hand" on a towel or something, then I would recomend you use hand lotion with vitamin E.
This stuff is really inexpensive and comes in large quantities. Also, if you are having seal problems due to pubic hair, this stuff is way more thick than a water base lube (ID Glide) and will promote a tighter seal against your body.
As suggested above, along with Lotion will come the mess. Whatever basin/tub you wash your cylinder in eventually get washed onto the that medium. A tub for example will be a bit slippery due to the residue lotion. Same goes for the cylinder - If you do not use a baby bottle brush, you will always have a small film deposit of residue lotion on the inside of the cylinder.
Hope this answers your question.
Thanks,
Nick
